Don’t worry — your e-mail address is totally secure. I promise to use it only to send you Clock Collecting Tips. There are so many styles and types of clocks, made by so many clock makers and from so many countries, that I was totally lost. Over many years, I have learned a lot. I have concentrated on the American clock companies for my collection, so there is much for me to learn about clocks from outside the US. The question I get most from the comment form on this web site is: Some people will see a clock at an antique store that would look good in a certain room of their house, and end up with it that way. However you might end up with your special clock, you probably would like to identify, date and generally learn more about it. This clock forum page may be able to help.

It is also the source of the English idiom ‘a cat’s paw’, defined in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary as ‘one used by another as a tool’. Johannes Sambucus reports it as happening recently in the Dutch town of Bergen op Zoom in his Emblemata The Latin poem there continues, ‘A small monkey gave us an example noteworthy and amusing for its cunning.
For, when he saw the chestnuts buried in the hearth, he began to brush the ash aside but, afraid of the burning coals, he suddenly seized the foot of a sleeping puppy and stole it out.

Although there is no evidence that the story existed before the 15th century, it began to appear in collections of Aesop’s Fables from the 17th century but is not included in the Perry Index.
The requirements for making a good mirror are a surface with a very high degree of flatness preferably but not necessarily with high reflectivity , and a surface roughness smaller than the wave-length of the light. The earliest manufactured mirrors were pieces of polished stone such as obsidian , a naturally occurring volcanic glass. Examples of obsidian mirrors found in Anatolia modern-day Turkey have been dated to around B.
Mirrors made of other metal mixtures alloys such as copper and tin speculum metal may have also been produced in China and India. Stone mirrors often had poor reflectivity compared to metals, yet metals scratch or tarnish easily, so they frequently needed polishing. Depending upon the color, both often yielded reflections with poor color rendering. If well used, however, the mirror can aid moral meditation between man and himself.
Socrates, we are told by Diogenes , urged young people to look at themselves in mirrors so that, if they were beautiful, they would become worthy of their beauty, and if they were ugly, they would know how to hide their disgrace through learning. The mirror, a tool by which to ” know thyself ,” invited man to not mistake himself for God, to avoid pride by knowing his limits, and to improve himself.
His was thus not a passive mirror of imitation but an active mirror of transformation. Because the surface of glass is naturally smooth, it produces reflections with very little blur. In addition, glass is very hard and scratch-resistant.

A very pleasant day at Cambridge Gun Club, apart from having to cross a lorry route 4 inches deep in sloppy mud in my shoes! Anyway Bev and Pete both gave the seal of approval to the Manton as being a good fast shooter, and I did hit a few with it. My conclusion was that I might as well shoot flintlock as the results are not much different and its more fun!
Its great to see the children tackling problems but doing it all in less than an hour is challenging. I have reluctantly come to the conclusion that I am not good at judging how fast a flintlock is going off unless its painfully slow! The experts seem to be able to hear from the sound of the firing just how fast ignition is, and to tune flintlocks up by using slightly different loading techniques for the fastest ignition. I might take my camera to see if I can get a video that can be used to time the whole discharge process.

Welcome to the Gotheborg. The field of Asian Ceramics collecting is a challenging one. Not the least due to the large number of terms of various origins, problem compounded by a variety of spellings and transcriptions.
